Whole-Wheat Waffles

An easy recipe that is a much healthier option that store bought waffles. The whole wheat flour gives a different color to the waffle that you might be used to. You can always use all purpose flour instead, if you don’t prefer the whole wheat taste or texture. Using vegetable oil instead of butter in the batter results in a fluffier waffle. Approx cook time - 15 mins

Ingredients

  • 1 cup whole-wheat flour

  • 1 teaspoon salt

  • 2 teaspoons baking powder

  • 1 egg

  • 1 cup milk

  • 1/8 cup of vegetable or canola oil

  • 1 cup of fruit (berries and/or bananas, optional)

  • maple syrup

  • salted butter

Directions

  • To a mixing bowl, add flour, salt and baking powder

  • Stir the dry ingredients to mix

  • Put the egg in a separate bowl and lightly beat it with a fork

  • Pour the egg into the flour mixture

  • Add the oil and milk to the flour mixture

  • Stir the batter till it has a smooth consistency without lumps

  • Heat up the waffle iron

  • Pour one spoonful of batter in the middle of the iron and spread it around gently

  • Use all the batter to make waffles; you can freeze what you don’t use

  • Top the waffles with fruit, some salted butter and maple syrup
